From the Chief’s Corner: Are We Part of the Problem or the Answer?
By Chief Alan Perdue (ret.), SBC Executive Director
This poignant question echoes with significant relevance today. The focus is on the testing and evaluation of in-building radio coverage, ensuring it meets the requirements set by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and Frequency License Holder. Alarmingly, improper testing methods and equipment are leading to unnecessary installations of Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) in buildings that do not need them.

In Florida, there is growing concern and confusion among commercial and multifamily property owners regarding the mandated compliance deadlines for Emergency Responder Radio Coverage Systems (ERRCS). State legislation requires buildings over 10 stories to install a code-compliant ERRCS, including a Bi-Directional Amplifier (BDA) and a Distributed Antenna System (DAS).
In our rapidly evolving data-centric world, data access has become as essential as traditional utilities like power and water, often referred to as the "fourth utility." As organizations increasingly rely on fast, secure data access, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized the use of Band 48, known as the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), to meet these growing needs.
