From the Chief’s Corner: Thoughts in the Wake of Recent Tragedies…
By Chief Alan Perdue (Ret.), CFO, FM, Executive Director – Safer Buildings Coalition

Over the past several weeks there have been numerous headlines related to different tragedies across the United States. From significant fires and building collapses resulting in loss of life of both public and firefighters in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Florida, to law enforcement officers being gunned down while on and off the job. While we do not have all the final investigation reports on some of these current events yet, what we do know from experience is that the perception of something in one’s mind - let’s call that attitude - can impact the way one views and forms opinions about a particular issue. That attitude can then lead one to take action, or a lack thereof, that can impact both theirs and someone else’s life. Sounds confusing right? Not really, I’ll try to explain from a former fire chief’s point of view.

The Safer Buildings Coalition continues to grow. We now have more than 150 member organizations across several categories. We value each and every member, and it's our pleasure to introduce you to a few of the latest additions to our member base: Advanced Wireless Communications, Alive Telecom, and FirstNet Built with AT&T.
The Advancement Workgroup is in the process of our annual evaluation of our objectives and adjusting as needed for 2022. Our prime directive is to attract new members, advocate for the existing ones and bring measurable value to our existing membership base.
The Codes and Standards Work Group held our monthly meeting on 1/7/22. We are outside the current national model code cycles, but working on additional input for multiple code issues and are standing up several subcommittees to document and define problems, and provide potential solutions to the larger workgroup for input and recommendation to SBC leadership.
