One of the things I have learned during my public safety career is that there are certain people that either can’t — or don’t want to — admit that they don’t know or understand something. Instead of searching out the truth, they often just make it up as they go. That's fine if you are playing a game with a group of friends. However, if you are enforcing codes and standards, such a make-it-up-as-you-go approach is ill-advised.
Having a clear understanding of what you are requiring as a code official is paramount to applying and enforcing the requirements.
SBC 2024 Seminar Planning: First Round Is Underway

The 2024 Safer Buildings Coalition Seminar Season will be one of our most ambitious years ever as we take our mission on the road.
Paid Tier SBC members have received the official ballot for choosing seminar sponsorships and locations. Seminar City Selection balloting is open till November 30th, and the Seminar List with Confirmed Sponsors will be posted by close of business December 1st. Round 2, which invites Paid Tier members to submit bids for the remaining available cities, kicks off Friday, December 8th.

The Safer Buildings Coalition represented the In-Building Public Safety Wireless Community of Practice at two key Fire Marshal and Inspector conferences in the past few weeks: The Texas Fire Marshals Association Annual Conference in San Marcos, TX October 23-27, and the 75th Annual Florida Fire Prevention Conference held by the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association in Gainesville, November 6-8.

A long and successful SBC seminar season came to a close in Greensboro, NC — home of the Coalition's Executive Director Chief Alan Perdue — on November 2nd.
The night before, SBC treated sponsors and members to a very special get-together at the Chief's Firehouse Pub. In attendance were representatives from Pierson Wireless, Alliance Communications, Westell, SpeakEZ, Wireless Supply, Honeywell-Fiplex , PCTEL, Comba, G-Way & Mobile Communications America. The inaugural Safer Buildings Town Hall is set for Thursday, January 25th, 2024. The hour-long event will feature updates from SBC leadership, look-ahead to 2024 SBC and industry events, break-out sessions and Q&A.

The Government Affairs Work Group has been monitoring the Florida Legislative Days, for and bills being introduced that might affect the ERCES Ecosystem. This is in anticipation of the 2024 Legislative session beginning in January.
We have seen several states adopting NFPA 1225, which is key to development in states such as California and Georgia.
Our TG chairs Chris Creamer for Florida and Richard Roberts for California are full engaged and ready to assist if anyone has a topic that they want the Government Affairs group to tackle.
The Member Advocacy Work Group is in the process of planning the inaugural SBC Town Hall meeting, which is set for Thursday, January 25th, 2024. Stay tuned for more info on this event.
